Physical Characteristics

The Vietnam warty pig is an enigmatic species - it was described from two skulls in 1892, and only one other specimen has ever been procured (a skull in 1995). No whole specimens have ever been studied, and no live animals have ever been positively identified or observed.

Skull characteristics suggest that the Vietnam warty pig is similar to the Javan warty pig (Sus verrucosus). However, genetic evidence suggests that the recent skull attributed to Sus bucculentus in fact belongs to Sus scrofa (the Eurasian wild pig). The debate to whether Sus bucculentus represents a unique species, a hybrid, or a form of the Eurasian wild pig with extreme skull characteristics has not yet been resolved.

Habitat and Distribution

The Vietnam warty pig is known only from the Annamite mountains in Vietnam and Laos, but the small number of specimens precludes even an approximate range map. The typical habitat of the region is moist broad-leafed forest, mixed with bamboo and palms. The specimen localities are depicted in the map below.
